It’s not so much that I began to run, but that I continued.”

About LRC

LRC is a Mackay-based running group open to anyone and everyone who likes to run in a relaxed, social environment. There is no cost and no pressure – but there is plenty of support and fun! Coordinated by Chrissy Evangelou and Dawn Mansfield, LRC was started in 2010 and we hold runs three mornings a week – come rain, hail or shine.

Beginners

You start off on a gentle interval program learning to do a 5km run, and then we help you to progress through to whatever distance you want to achieve

Personal best

We encourage our runners to improve their times and distances (if you want to), or just to turn up every week – whatever your personal goal is, we will support you

Half marathons

Each year we start training for people interested in running half marathon from the beginning of February

Local charity event

Each year we hold a charity run/walk over 5km to raise funds for a variety of local charities and causes through the Mackay Hospital Foundation

Pyjama Run

One of our major fundraising events every year is the Pyjama Run, which raises money for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (and is a lot of fun!)

Run2Glow

Another of our major fundraising events is our Glow Run, where everyone spends a lot of time and money getting themselves, prams and small bikes all done up with glow sticks to raise money for the Mackay Mental Health Unit, through the Mackay Hospital Foundation.

LRC HISTORY

LRC Mackay was formed in April 2010 as the local running bug was starting to gain momentum. An unusual demographic of 40yo+ people, 22 women and one man who weren’t runners, became the first ever LRC group. Most were unable to run for 100 metres, let alone 5 kilometres. However, after eight weeks of training, all were able to do just that and 23 unlikely people entered and successfully ran the Mackay Marina Run in June 2010. A popular feature of LRC from the beginning to now is socialising over coffee after the Saturday run and many a wonderful friendship has developed.

Because of the success of the first group, it was decided to commence new groups. Each time the success of the past groups had been realised, the word spread and we have an amazing turnout each time a new beginners group starts. We now have four beginners’ groups commence each year, a database of over 1000 names and a Facebook following of over 2300.

A new concept of the LRC in recent years, due to popular demand, has been to train people for the half marathon. Many runners take part in the Gold Coast Marathon events along with the local Mackay Marina Run and other major events such as Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island Hilly Half, Whitehaven Beach Run, Townsville Marathon, Bridge to Brisbane, Sydney to Surf and Melbourne events.

LRC Running Club Mackay is not an affiliated group and there are no membership fees. The organisers head up this club as a community group for like-minded people to join and make friends in an open space environment.
